As always, things have precedence, and you have to decide which was the inciting event. In my view, the inciting event in the present case, events, are those that I mentioned -- the constant intense repression; plenty of abductions; plenty of atrocities in Gaza; the steady takeover of the West Bank, which, in effect, if it continues, is just the murder of a nation, the end of Palestine; the abduction on June 24 of the two Gaza civilians; and then the reaction to the abduction of Corporal Shalit. And there's a difference, incidentally, between abduction of civilians and abduction of soldiers. Even international humanitarian law makes that distinction.

I watched that interview this morning and thought Chomsky was very fair.
He didn't dispute that Iran might be behind it all and even called the notion plausible, but the simple truth is we don't know why Hizbullah did what they did.
I imagine it was to show solidarity with Palestine, but again, I'm guessing as we all are. Only Irseal and the US entertain no doubts even when they have no proof.
And that worked out just smashing for the US in Iraq, didn't it? No really, didn't it?

You read an awful lot and keep yourself very informed, wish I could watch as much tv as you do (in terms of the non entertainment type)..I am so looking forward to doing more of it when the kiddies go back to school.
Yes, I think Chomsky was being realistic to not rule out Iran and I think what the 'no doubters' forget is, that those who look at it from the non Israeli perspective, are not necessarily apologists. I think we're all pretty much clear on the fact that there are many ulterior motives and games being played out that no news (especially the ones that end up on tv) will show.
I cannot imagine that you haven't gone over to read, but check out Mash's post for today. I hope to surf over to yours pretty soon too..

btw, it's good you do use your british terminology (which I grew up learning in Holland), sometimes I think you're in the States with your observations on US politics..

I do watch and read a lot. Too much time on my hands.
My worry about the blogathon is that I have to post every half hour for 24 hours. Even someone with my amount of leisure time balks at that thought.
Or have I got this all wrong? What do you mean you only have to commit to once post minimum? As I post about three articles a day I'd agree to do that as I do that anyway. It's sitting here at three in the morning with coffee that I dread!
