Back from Washington DC - part 1

On the Mall in front of the Lincoln memorial..it's so different seeing it in person than seeing it, yet again, in a picture.

The Vietnam Memorial

The 'latest' edition, finally; the World War II memorial

Wow, what a whirlwind that was. It was, trains, planes automobiles (and ofcourse, the metro and a cab here and there and a bus)

I'm catching up on things I need to do around the house as we came home very late Saturday night and this morning, both kids each went to their perspective summer camp..so for now.. just a few pics to show you before commentary and stories..

The one I will tell you is that I---WE (the family) got to meet Mash(from Docstrangelove blog) on our first day there and my kids and his daughter just took off and played loud and hard (a bump here and there but on the whole, no blood! [g]).. and my husband James and I had some very interesting discussions/conversations re. politics and the Obama campaign and American politics. James and Mash are really on par in terms of political knowledge and observation/insight..I was recuperating from a night of hardly any sleep, getting up waaay too early to be at the airport for the first flight and all that traveling..but..with coffee in hand, I enjoyed the company and conversation. I was not really too alert but hey, I am always good for an opinion or two.. Thanks for having us Mash and thanks to your lovely wife (doing an imitation of the Scarlett Pimpernell, she was not present) for the great spread of food and drinks...

Mash and moi!

Mash, 'moi' and James, great picture taking Surah!

This post warmed my heart. Really. It did. I'm glad the two of you got to meet each other, and also that you and your family made it back safely.

You're home just in time. Did you see the latest issue of The New Yorker?

Robster, you must have had your ears glow a few times because you did come up in the conversation of course. I suspect Mash will see you next and unless you have reason to come visit Austin, I won't. Mash has a relative I believe in SD or it's work related, I forgot but if it's you guys to meet up next, that would be awesome.. still, I have hopes you'll be next on my list..
and yes, the new yorker, how unbelievably idiotic is that?? I know that Presidential candidates always get poked fun off or insulted big time via cartoon etc but still, you'd expect it in a Southern publication but not a Northern one.. in fact, I think racism on the whole is stronger up North and in the South unlike popular belief.. this just bakes the cake.. no one even saw that fine line as they warp sped right over it...(ok, bad english but you get the gist..)

hugs

Ingrid

Looks like such fun! Somehow I was under the misimpression the kids were farmed out to a summercamp for your trip. This is MUCH better; they need to see what's going on there. Glad you're back!

ps, I've never been to DC ... well, actually, never been hardly anywhere east of the Mississippi. Husband spent time all around that area & still talks about the incredible HUMIDITY and getting bit by a copperhead in VA.

Rogel, if only!! I'd love to come by and visit you and your family as well.. I'm so glad my kids travel well..they're also pretty game in meeting other kids so I'll never have to worry about that either..
Blueberry..check!
DK no worries.. I can imagine that humidity AND a copperhead bite makes for some nasty associations..how appropriate those associations should be with Washington though [g].. traveling is fun but with kids it's always a bit of a challenge.. it's always good to come back home and sleep in your own bed.
E..well, what an exciting trip that would be if you'd travel for the Inauguration...let's hope it will come about..thanks for the compliments, as cute as my posse is, sometimes...[hehe]I'd outsource them...
The Vietnam Memorial felt very solemn and that's when the kids started to wear down from the heat so we walked as quickly as we could in order not to disturb the peace!!
Mash hasn't been very active lately but he's extremely political savvy. He's the son of former diplomat parents so he knows a thing or two and got the genes to match..
I would browse some of his older material..I think you'd be really impressed.
