The Austin-American Statesman endorses Obama

Darron Cummings, photo
Sen. Barack Obama represents what we all profess to love about our country: an intelligent youngster who grew beyond his family's modest circumstances to earn an Ivy League education and eventually win a seat in the U.S. Senate and from there launch a bid for the presidency.

Wow..anything coming from Texas is great! I don't know the current tally of newspapers who have endorsed Obama and which one have endorsed McCain, see Editor and Publisher, a journal that covers the newspaper industry (hat tip Enigma);

And apparently anything coming from Texas is considered a 'shocker';

Shocker from Texas: Houston and Austin Papers--Former Bush Backers--Endorse Obama

"NEW YORK As chronicled by E&P in recent days, a, overwhelming trend from big city newspapers in editorial endorsements has favored Barack Obama with several papers that backed George W. Bush in 2004 switching over to the Democrat this year. But few expected that would happen deep in the heart of Texas.

Now it has, with the Houston Chronicle and Austin American Statesman coming out for Obama today.

Obama in Austin, veeery early on in the campaign

That brings to at least 17 the number of papers that have made the switch. The Dallas Morning News and San Antonio Express-News did stick with the GOP candidate John McCain but he has lost papers all over the country, from the Chicago Tribune to the San Bernardino Sun to the New York Daily News."

This is from my local newspaper, the Austin American Statesman;

"Each of the two major presidential candidates fill the air with different words that all say "change," but only Sen. Barack Obama defines change clearly and positively.

It is a time of peril, both at home and abroad, and the nation needs the focused, energetic leadership Obama has projected and delivered since he announced his presidential candidacy in early 2007." [snip] "
In the third and final debate last week, John McCain, the Republican senator from Arizona, tried to bait him into the gutter, but Obama refused to get down there. Political wisdom dictates that candidates who are attacked return double the fire directed at them. Obama responded calmly, defending himself but declining to respond in kind.

Now that's change."

This is what the Houston Chronicle had to say;

"After carefully observing the Democratic and Republican nominees in drawn-out primary struggles as well as in the general campaign, including three debates, the Chronicle strongly believes that the ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden offers the best choice to lead the United States on a new course into the second decade of the 21st century.

Obama appears to possess the tools to confront our myriad and daunting problems. He's thoughtful and analytical. He has met his opponents' attacks with calm and reasoned responses. Viewers of the debates saw a poised, well-prepared plausible president with well-articulated positions on the bread-and-butter issues that poll after poll indicate are the true concerns of voters. While Arizona Sen. John McCain and his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have struck an increasingly personal and negative tone in their speeches, Obama has continued to talk about issues of substance."

Here is OFF THE GRID witht their tally; Texas’ Seven Largest Newspapers Endorse Obama, check 'm out.

What can I say..YEEEHAWW!!

    I'm still waiting for my local Republican fish wrap to endorse someone.

  3. Obama is getting his due! He is our only chance! It sickens me to hear pundits lie and say Palin and McCain are what is best for us. That is just sick! Powell endorsing Obama was huge and the right down plays it! You know my concerns so I'll just shut up!

  4. I got an email from a friend of mine in Austin who reported this.

    She said the Dallas Morning News, however, endorsed the Old Coot.

    I'm not an expert on that part of the country but I thought Dallas was way more liberal than Houston?

    The state-by-state numbers suggest that despite the havoc Bush and the GOP unleashed on the country these past 8 years, Texas is still overwhelmingly in the Old Coot's column.

    I guess some things will never change.

  5. RJ, BE and Jim, wonders never seize do they? It's nice to hear all this good news but still, there is so much ugliness and fraudulent behaviour coming from the McCain camp that I am still 'holding my breath' as it were.
    Christopher, as for your surprise re. Dallas.. I'd be too as the Dallas mayor is gay and I too thought that they were much more liberal..must be that 'old' money though!! Houston attracted big crowds for Obama so that doesn't surprise me. The Austin American Statesman who is too conservative for me (hence I don't read it nor am a subscriber) did surprise me, inspite of Austin being a college town. Obama was invited to come and speak in Zilker park here before he even announced his run for the Democratic nomination.. there are some really loyal Obama people here in this town..thank God!!

  6. I sure like him in that hat!

    Newspaper endorsements can seem odd/surprising. The paper in Crawford where Dubya lives endorsed Obama, and Kerry last time around. I don't *think* that's a liberal town... I could be wrong.

    I don't really know how indicative a newspaper's endorsement is of the political makeup of an area, but I hope that in many these cases (where the endorsements have flipped red for blue) that it's influential on those reading it.

  7. Hi Ingrid
    Not long to go and it seems (according to the pollsters)your dreams will be realized.
    Who would have thought it was possible just few years ago, we will wait with bated breath but the news as you have aptly referenced seems to be improving now with each day. I trust you largely over the infection and feeling heaps better?
    Best wishes

  8. hi, ingrid...what a surprise, not so much for the Austin paper, but for Houston...some are thinking Houston will go blue in this election like Dallas did in the last one.

  9. Blueberry..ah a man and his hat. It does look becoming but then, he's one of those people who can wear anything and look good. (not me) Lindsay, boy, it is anti climactic in a way but I have no doubt that the world over people are holding their breath with me. Who would've thought this a few years ago indeed!! Thanks for remembering re. the staph. A few weeks ago the incision wound healed up and I was off the antibiotic. My mother in Holland is very thankful and of course, so am I as I can attribute the right treatment to our dear Enigma (watergate summer) who send me to the ER on the double where it got treated properly. It's good to have a 'red button' connecting you to a 'nurse'! [s]
    Maria..you know so much more about Texas politics...if Houston goes 'blue' that would be awesome. Someone at that one dem travis county meeting where you and I were a while back (across the street) someone mentioned how they predicted Texas to be a blue state by 2020. Well, if it weren't for the fact I'd age myself real quick I'd say, 2020 cannot come fast enough!!
