Childhood dreams

One of the things Randy Pausch discussed in his 'last lecture', the lecture that has been posted on Youtube and his book of the same name, was the fact that many of his childhood dreams came true. He encouraged parents to foster their kids' dreams the way his parents did. So I got to thinking about mine. For a few days I could not remember. Too many things had happened that influenced me in sad and painful ways that they almost seemed to have been buried too deep inside. Then, finally..I remembered. And the fact that I remembered, inspite of all the knocks and detours and many MANY sleep deprived nights that tweaked my brain chemistry to not function as swiftly and intelligently as it once did, well inspite of it all, they resurfaced. Is in these dreams, the essence of me?

Anyway..here are my dreams as I had them before I became an official 'adult';

To ride a horse (or own one)
be a writer
photography
travel
be a comedian (or be considered funny)

there you have it. For now, I won't go into the 'whys' and 'how comes'..

if you stop to think, what were your honest to goodness childhood dreams?

  1. wow this is a wonderful list....and what a wonderful thing to do...

    I am sorry your dreams were buried...and that you were seperated from them...I felt sad when you said that- if you were here I would make you some OoLong tea and some arrowroot cookies..and give you a hug- help you jog those memories ;-)

    the list is wonderful...and in many ways you are living your dreams....you are a wonderful writer...and your photos are beautiful...and I don't know you well, but you seem to have traveled more than most ;-)
    and I hate to tell you- but you are funny...

    many hugs...hold onto those dreams lady

  2. Dearest E...thank you for your kind words, I did not mean for the post to sound like a 'woe is me' piece.. afterwards there was one more thing that I missed on the list; dancing!
    But aside of all that, if only I could come over for some tea and cookies..heck, I'd be there for 'no reason at all'!! I realized how frustrated I am with the non social contacts (how hard can it be to make friends?? damn hard geesh) who stay on the side of 'acquaintances' and at bay, I am frustrated being the bored stay at home mom and school year after school year life seems to pass by..
    so I started making the smallest of changes and hopefully, eventually, they get me 'somewhere'.. speaking of 'somewhere'..are you still thinking about moving for 6-6's sake? Too bad that the triple digits here scare yo (and no doubt tx politics) but we (blueberry I'm sure, I'm taking the liberty to speaking for her ahem) would love to have you..

    as for those dreams..to be continued as they say...

    hugs

  3. Hey there Friend...
    You are one of the most interesting moms I have ever met....and I admire what you do for your children and how you treasure them....and that you embrace who they are....Not all parents do that...being a mom is the most important job you will ever have and you do it so well....ALL moms get restless and have moments where they feel stagnent...and worry...but know this...You are doing the most important thing right now....Something that truly matters...popsicles to spilled glue to the trips to the pool....it matters....every last wiped nose, and sticky peanut butter hug....

    Ahhh, the Texas Heat...yeah, I do worry it would melt my little ol ticker...But hey ALL options are on the table...I am looking at everything.....Especially ANY place that has Film Schools for 6-6....

    many many hugs...and some cookies and tea...

  4. well Ingrid that really puts the old brain to work ... to remember childhood dreams! These are some that I recall:

    to be an astronaut;
    to be the empress of the world;
    to be in love & be loved in return;
    to be a reknowned authority on one subject;
    to speak another language like a native;
    to be witty & funny (see we have that in common!)

    OK, so I hit the jackpot on #3, and I guess I am Empress of MY World. 2 of 5 ain't bad.

    ps, if you were talking about making new friends in TX, you should try it in UT. Damn near impossible ... unless you are a member of the dominant religion. I am waiting for the local college to offer an adult class in atheism where hub & I could perhaps make contact with some non-religiosos. I think that will be a long wait.

  5. E, such kind words and they were very well received when I read them! (sometimes timing is everything and you got 'timing'! lol) I suspect that one of the things they'll remember the most (one hopes) is the snuggles we have in and out of bed, we do love that as a family!
    DK..UT inspite of being huge sounds pretty clickish! Well, if I'd ever go there I'd be going as a part time student so I would not join any club anyway. So did you use to live in Austin? I've become 'non-religioso' but my husband still has his notions. Not that we go to church but it's the security blanket I think he needs although he's not that religious when it comes to it.. I definitely want the kids to be exposed to buddism and the tao as a more worthwhile spiritual path that most people seem to have in their lives..this is a very Christian environment although I've not been bothered about it one way or another..Austin can also be pretty open and I think the strict religious are probably more found outside Austin..
