What is your accent?

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

what do you know? How do I explain this?? Hmm.. I was born and raised in the Netherlands where I was taught ([tawt]) British english, hence my spelling. Then I emigrated to Canada (Ottawa) where they speak pretty well 'clear' english, not too 'slangy' or anything and after that I've lived pretty well in the southern part of the US. I can do my little 'ya'll' singing, lilt, whatever you'd call it but on the whole.. if anything, esPECially when I'm tired, people can detect my Dutch accent..somewhat.

  1. hmmmm ... yours makes sense when you remember New York (yawk) was originally New Amsterdam. Although I'm not sure exactly how a Dutch accent would sound (German-like?), I would say you have an International Accent!

    As you know, I scored the Midland accent even though I've never spent any time there. And hub got Northeast even though he hasn't lived there since he was 3-yrs old. In both cases I think we are mirroring our parents & granparents various accents, even if only in certain words.

  2. Yes, I have that Northeast accent -- or lack of one. It's pretty much the same way that newscasters talk on TV.

    I find the accents in Queens and Long Island, New York intriguing. Very hard to discern its origins.

    Thanks for visiting Scholars & Rogues on a regular basis, Ingrid.

  3. well DK..I'm not 'that' old LOL.. But hey, my husband grew up in the SW so he doesn't have much of an accent.. my accent I have no idea how it sounds but people who know people who are originally Dutch recognize the difference between Dutch and German. I will meet for the first time with one of my blogger buddies when we'll go to Washington DC in a little over a week and since he's a naturalized American from Bangladeshi origin, I wonder how he'll 'sound'. Reading someone's posts you have an internal 'voice' based on how they write. I have been toying with the idea to do a fun experiment and 'read' my post and then post the taping (however to do that, haven't thought of that).
    anyway, where in the SW are you?

    Russ, I remember the story of English (the PBS series by MacNeil and some other people;
    http://homepage.mac.com/ebranscomb/courses/HEL/story.html)
    and I have always been fascinated by people's pronunciation and even wanted to be a dialect coach once..
    Luckily for Law and Order and its spin-offs we can hear quite a bit of the various NY accents..I love it too!
    I found Scholars and Rogues through your posting the link on Jeff's Pen and Sword blog. I like to read about politics without it necessarily attracting people who get upset if a particular candidate falls short of their expectations and it becomes a mutual agreement society. At S&R I feel that people can at least discuss their differences without political ideologues getting in the way. I might be left or different positions on the left depending on the issue, but I do not necessarily ingratiate myself when the majority of 'left' takes one position and I disagree. Of course, [s] it's not the way to 'make friends and influence people' but too bad..
    thanks for stopping by Russ. S&R is a good smorgasbord for my brain..

  6. Well, I always say I have NO accent, but I know certain words come out of my mouth funny. I grew up in Nevada (vegas), but spent most of my adult life around all the western states. For now, I am in SW UT, which has its own strange patois (sorry it's not sticking, I am still Nevadan).

    Re: "reading a post" ... I know there's a way to do a short burst of digital video on blogger, but I've never tried it. It would pick up the sound of your voice reading. I've seen others use this feature. Look in your blogger compose text tools for something that looks like a strip of film. I'm sure you could figure it out. My neice uses this blogger feature to post short bursts of her year-old twins. You can hear them gurgling & laughing as they play. Anyway, it WOULD be interesting to do a post of that & invite others to do the same.
