  1. Actually, a lot less would have save the levees from failing. That's bureaucracy for you.

  3. Yohay and Robster, I responded yesterday and then, phloop! Blogger ate it. (is it this beta thing they're working on?? who knows) Anyhow... It is a sad statement that this gov't does not have the kind of earmarking for emergency preparedness than they do for their war mongering. Part of it must be the way it's federally structured; the individual states are supposed to take great part in prevention and responding, I am assuming. I say, assuming since here in TX last year they were touting how they were ready for any hurricane landfall by showing what they were doing and what they would do in the event off. New Orleans should not be there IMHO. Levees that work or not. It is geographically in the wrong place and the destruction of the Mississippi river bottom plus the fact that the marshlands are there for a reason is something that people will not want to consider. Yes, NO has been there for a few hundred years but no, I have no sympathy. The global weather changes that every sane scientists agrees with are such that coastal areas are just not areas for viable living. The billions in dollars wasted each time a hurricane hits anywhere in the Gulf (most of all FL) is ridiculous. They do not want to consider prevention of loss of life and property because 'it would cost too much'..I guess those billions of dollars must be more palatable to them.
Mirvat, amen to that! I am reading Howard Zinn's book on 'the people's history of the US, 1492 to present ' and the corruption of those men and racism towards anything that wasn't white male is atrocious. Unfortunately, the notion of the glorious American history reigns supreme, but the more I read, the more I am disgusted by exactly that; white male landowners and pre-capitalists who used religion and women to elevate their own status. It just doesn't stop does it??
ok..I'm stepping of my soap box!
