Well, the Arab world is not helping much as they never have when it came to the Palestinians. This is an exerpt from Mahmoud's Den:
So what’s new? You actually expected that the “summit” which was held today in Egypt to actually result in anything other than this? If you answered yes, then you have an awful lot to learn about us Arabs, and you will need a couple of lifetimes to catch-up. No. Nothing was expected of them.
1. They have never, ever, held a single position, not even in existential matters.
2. They will never, ever, hold a single position.
3. They wait for a few days to hold their “emergency” summit, while the whole world has already held their’s!
4. When they finally do meet, we get disperate position, views, and what’s left is simple posturing. What for, I have no faintly idea
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you wrote, except:
"The current dialogues, discussions, heated and civilized are centered around a major reaction (Israel's) to an action (Hamas' military wing's abduction)."
While it is factually correct to say that the Israeli offensive in Gaza was in response to the kidnapping of Shalit, I'm uneasy with the framing of the current situation as being sparked off by the abduction of Shalit.
Why was the 'escalation point' not, for example, June 24 when Israel kidnapped two Palestinians? Or June 20, when an IAF missile strike killed a three year old Palestinian girl?
Heathlander, I don't disagree with you. I am actually suspicious of the fact that the action that led to the abduction was, as Chomsky calls it, the original "inciting event". Except, for whatever reason..the provoking acts leading to the 'reactions' of the Palestinians (for example the first Intifada), are never so much discussed in details in the mainstream media. As in, not criticized as they should be. The reason for the statement I made was really for reference sake because I was trying to make a point, even though I know full well that there have been plenty of unreported incidences.(in the mainstream media that is, if they'd report each Israeli action, someone be likely to cry foul and anti-semitism)
ReplyDeleteKT, coming from Mahmoud who's an intelligent and reasonable and pragmatic person (from having gone to his site since a few months)it is 'easier' to bring to the foreground..but the Arab world (by which I mean the ones in power) have plenty of complicity in this situation as a whole.
